What are the FUNdamentals?
The FUNdamentals 1&2 courses are one-day climbing movement and technique workshops looking at the ABCs i.e., Agility, Balance, Co-Ordination. The course gives you the skills to break down climbing movements and teach them to your climbing groups and clients.
I did the course to develop my coaching skills so I could better analyse climbing movements and techniques and be a better coach for my clients. Continual professional development is vital in any industry, especially the outdoors, with so much to learn and sink your teeth into FUNdamentals was an excellent way for me to continue developing as an instructor and as a coach.
What happened?
The two courses were 1 dayers and I did them back to back. For me, this was a great way to do it as my time is spread thin at the moment. I could build upon the FUNdamentals 1 course straight away on Sunday.
The day was broken down into theoretical elements and practical elements. The theory was a BMC PowerPoint giving information about long-term athlete development, injury prevention for adults and children, physical literacy and other great pointers.
The practical side of the course involved taking part in a variety of new warm-ups, games, movement drills, movement breakdowns and some instructing of each other. It was great to learn from the provider and also from each other, sharing experiences of what has worked and not worked for us and why.
Take Aways
If you are already an experienced coach or instructor you may not take as much away from the course as you would if you were fresh to it. The FUNdamentals take you back to the basics of coaching and instructing for climbing and gives you a strong structure to build from.
I found FUNdermentals 2 my favorite of the pair as it went into more detail about physical literacy and long-term athlete development. LTAD is something I hadn’t come across in much detail before the course so I have really enjoyed learning more about it since.
The FUNdamentals I attended covered so much. It is a great way to solidify knowledge or develop your practice as an experienced coach and/or instructor so I would really recommend getting booked onto a course.
